FAQs

What does hypnosis feel like?

It feels different for everyone and it can feel slightly different every time.  Normally, people feel very calm and relaxed.  It can feel a bit like dreaming.  You can hear everything I say if you choose to but often people drift off into their own pleasant daydreams and that is fine. Sometimes you remember everything about the session and sometimes you are so relaxed that it feels like you are asleep and you don't remember very much.

I don’t want you to make me run around like a chicken like they do on the stage.

The work that I will carry out with you is Clinical Hypnosis.  This means that I will be using hypnotic trance techniques to help you to achieve the goals that YOU tell me you want to achieve.
I cannot make anybody do anything.  When you see people doing silly things in a stage show, they have been influenced by the Hypnotist in a very subtle manner.  They are always the show-offs, the extroverts who would not mind being silly in front of people whether they were in a hypnotic trance or not. They DO know what they are doing as they are in full control.  And even when they sit down afterwards they always have the excuse - "He controlled my mind, he MADE me do it!" The fact remains that I cannot make you do anything that you do not want to.

What happens during a hypnotherapy session?

The first session takes the longest.  I take a case history from you and we have a chat so I can get to know you better and find out what “makes you tick”.  We then have a good talk about whatever it is that you want help with.  The next part is to set some goals.  This is so that we know what we are aiming for, we know where we are going.  After all, it is useless to set out on a journey without knowing where we are going.
After all the chat, we do the formal hypnosis session.  I help you to achieve a hypnotic trance, usually just by talking to you.  I then talk to you about the way you can overcome the problem.

All my clients enjoy their hypnosis sessions, it feels so good!

How will I know that I am “under” hypnosis?

You may not know at all that you are in a trance because it feels different for different people and each session can feel a little different. You do not need to concern yourself with the depth of trance, I will know when you are in a trance.

Will  I be asleep in a hypnosis session?

In a hypnosis session you won't be asleep although you may feel like you have been. You are likely to feel extremely relaxed and possibly quite dreamy. Sometimes people do experience amnesia for the session and do not remember anything after relaxing in the chair, but this is very common. Afterwards you may still feel a little "spaced out" for a short time but you will feel energised and that you have had a good rest.

I am really nervous, I don't think I can talk about my problem with anyone else.

I have techniques that can help you without you even having to tell me exactly what your issue is. Many people are nervous when they start to address a long-standing problem in their life, but the most difficult part is making the appointment. I will make it as easy as possible for you after that. Read a few of my Testimonials if you need some reassurance.

I think my problem is too big to ever overcome

This is a common worry but do be assured that you CAN get better and you WILL get better. We may have to break the problem down into smaller parts but that's fine, that's what I am skilled at.

What is Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT?

Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT is a system of tapping on acupuncture points on the body in order to achieve relief from distressing emotions. I teach it to many of my clients alongside hypnosis because it is so versatile and complements hypnotherapy so beautifully. You can read more about EFT here.

What is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Re-processing or EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Re-processing or EMDR is a very new therapy technique which aims to relieve an individual from emotional stress by the use of specific and conscious movement of the eyes. It is particularly useful for cases of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or relieving any traumatic memory. My page on EMDR is still under construction but you can read more about EMDR from this American website.
